Job Description:

Family Guidance Centers, Inc. (FGC), a not-for-profit behavioral healthcare organization, treats and prevents substance abuse, as well as an array of other related problems.  ***$1000.00 dollar sign on bonus available, first 500.00 to be obtained after 30 days of employment, and 500.00 after 6 months of employment. !!!!***

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide Prescreen and Screening: The SBIRT Counselor conducts universal screening of patients/clients for alcohol and other drug use utilizing standardized screening tools (AUDIT, DAST-10). A simple tobacco and mental health screen (PHQ-2) are also used to identify need for expanded support.
  • Provide Brief Intervention: If a patient/client screens positive at the moderate risk level, a brief intervention (BI) is conducted by the SBIRT Counselor using motivational interviewing (MI) techniques to establish an open and trusted dialogue that encourages change. The focus is on the health impact/criminal justice impact of their use.
  • Provide Brief Therapy: If a patient/client screens positive at a high risk level, brief therapy (BT) is offered. BT is provided by trained, licensed DASA providers. BT utilizes MI and self-determination theory principles.
  • Provide Referral to Treatment: Referral to SUPR licensed treatment program if a person scores within the harmful level of use. Referral to treatment (RT) can happen at other points (after brief intervention or at the completion of the brief treatment) if ongoing evaluation indicates the need and the patient/client agrees to it.
  • Prioritizes and organizes work according to the acuteness of the situations presented.
  • Treats patients with respect and dignity and maintains and respects the confidentiality of all patients in accordance with 42 CFR and HIPAA regulations. Maintains a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Maintains good working relationships with hospital staff.
  • Attends in-house and off-site trainings for continuing education, in order to expand knowledge, improve the quality of patient services, and to maintain licensure and/or certification at all times.
  • Ability to use calendar and scheduling software, email, and agency’s clinical software program. Experience using desktop computers, copier, and fax machine.
  • Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to performing tasks which are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job, but may be altered or redesigned depending upon individual or programmatic circumstances.

Schedule : 8:30am-4:30pm; with some flexibility required to meet patient, agency, and hospital needs

Experience and Skills:

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or a related discipline from an accredited institution preferred. Master’s degree preferred, not required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: IAODAPCA Certified Alcohol and Other Drugs Counselor required; may be CADC eligible or possess at least 2 years’ experience in providing substance use disorder screening; assessing and/or counseling (must acquire CADC within 2 years of counseling experience). State of Illinois Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Social Worker or Licensed Clinical Social Worker preferred.
